Hoggenheimer
Equipment
a) One standard pack of 52 cards from which the 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, and 6s have
been removed;
b) One Joker (or any one of the discarded cards, if a Joker is not available);
c) Betting chips or cash.
Two or more.
ObjectivePlayers try to bet on a card (or cards) to be exposed before the Joker is exposed.
Choice of first bankerBanker is determined by high cut.
Shuffle and CutStandard.
Dealing the LayoutThe banker deals four rows of eight cards face down, and the 33rd card face down to one side. He takes care that no card's face is seen during the deal.
Betting LimitsThese are agreed beforehand.
BettingEach player except the banker places as many bets as he wishes.
The card bet on is shown by the position of the bet on the layout. The top row represents Spades, the next Hearts, the next Diamonds, and the bottom row Clubs. The column furthest to the right represents 7s, the next 8s, and so on; the column furthest to the left represents Aces.
Examples of BettingExamples of betting are shown in Figure 1:
a) is a bet on the Jack of Hearts;
b) on the King of Diamonds;
c) is on two adjacent cards the 7s of Spades and Hearts;
d) is on two adjacent cards the 9 and 10 of Spades;
e) is on four cards in a square the 8s and 9s of Hearts and Diamonds;
f) is on a column of cards of a single denomination all the 10s;
g) is on a row of cards of the same suit a bet on all the Diamonds.
The banker turns the 33rd card face up.
If it is a Joker the deal ends, and the banker collects all bets. If it is any other card, the banker places it face up in its correct position on the layout. Any bet on that position is replaced on top of the card. The face-down card that was in that position is removed, turned face up, and placed in its correct position in the layout.
Play continues in this way until the Joker appears.
Figure 1 Hoggenheimer
layout, showing Joker exposed and examples of bets
A player's bet wins, if all the cards bet on are turned up before the Joker. The banker collects all other bets.
In the example illustrated in Figure 1:
Bets (a), (c), and (d) win;
Bets (b), (e), (f), and (g) lose.
Bets on single cards are paid ito 1.
Bets on two cards are paid 2 to 1.
Bets on four cards in a square or column are paid 4 to 1.
Bets on eight cards in a row are paid 8 to 1.
The bank and deal pass one player to the left. This rotation overcomes any
bias in the settlement odds. All cards are collected for the next hand.
