Origins of the game
Known as Go
outside China, Wei Qi (pronounced way chi) was, according to Chinese
history, invented in China in the 23rd century BC. Generally, however, it
is thought more likely that the game originated in central Asia, from where
it spread eastwards through Nepal and Tibet to China. The earliest written
reference is found in the works of Mencius around 400BC. The first books
were written about Wei Qi during the T'ang dynasty between AD 618 and 906.
Basic rules and objectives
Go (Wei Qi)
for all its simplicity of rules, is arguably one of the most complex strategic
games. Two opponents place stones on a grid alternately. The grid can be
from 5x5 to 19x19 intersections, depending on the level of play. The objective
is to surround territory. At the end of the game, the player who controls
more territory is the winner.
