Chase the Ace

The game can be played with any number of players, and each player starts out with three tokens. If playing for money, all tokens must be of of equal value, whether they be coins or bills. A dealer is selected. The dealer shuffles the cards, and deals one card to each player in a clockwise motion, starting with the person to the dealer's immediate left. The players may look only at their own card. If any player has been dealt a King, he turns it over for all to see for the duration of the hand. This means that he is safe.

In a clockwise motion, starting with the person to the dealer's immediate left, each player gets a turn to exchange cards with the person to his immediate left, if he wishes. If he is content to keep the card he was dealt, he may pass. If the player wishes to exchange cards, the player to the left of the person who decides to exchange cards does not have a choice; he must exchange. Once a player has exchanged cards, he may not exchange back.

Kings may not be exchanged. If you are sitting to the right of someone who has a King, you may not exchange cards unless the person to your right mandates you to on his turn.

Now, it is the next person's turn to pass or exchange — he who sits to the immediate left of the person who had his chance to exchange or pass. This continues until it becomes the dealer's turn. The dealer may not exchange cards with the person to his left, but if not content to pass, the dealer may cut the pack. The dealer may cut the pack wherever he wishes, and the card that is turned up is the card that the dealer now must use. He may not use the card he had prior to cutting the pack.

At this point, everyone has had their turn to exchange or pass. Now, all players turn up the card they now control. Here is how paying works:

The objective is not to have the lowest card.

This is the card order, low to high: Ace 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 Ten Jack Queen King.

The player with the lowest card pays one token.

If more than one player has the same value card, and it is the lowest card, they each pay one token.

After a player has paid all three of his tokens, he may play on his honour. This means that he may continue to play until he must pay again. At this point, he must leave the game.

Now, the person sitting to the left of the dealer becomes the dealer. The last player remaining is awarded all tokens.

Variant

The objective is not to have the highest card.

The holder of the highest card pays 1 token. The King never pays, so the Queen is the highest card which pays. The holder of an Ace pays 2 tokens.
